The City of Perth Festival of Sail is a City of Perth sponsored event, commencing on Saturday, 27th January and concluding on Friday, 2nd February 2018. This is the second year of the City of Perth Festival of Sail and, as the organising body, Swan River Sailing is excited to present an increasingly robust program of events!
The main attraction of the 2018 City of Perth Festival is the Warren Jones International Youth Regatta – which will be held from the Monday through to the Friday of the festival, sailed in Perth Waters, right outside Elizabeth Quay.
The start of the City of Perth Festival of Sail will see two days of free ‘try sailing’ for children and adults out of Elizabeth Quay. We provided the same experience in September 2017 at the Club Marine Perth International Boat Show and it was a huge success! We can’t wait to give even more members of the general public and opportunity to try sailing!
On the Tuesday morning of the Festival of Sail, Swan River Sailing and the Royal Perth Yacht Club we be running Women On Water which will see a group of up to 80 locally based business-women try the sport of sailing and the benefits that it has to offer.
Wednesday evening is the Corporate Cup! Teams of our sponsors and locally based businesses, accompanied by high-profile Swan River Sailing skippers, will battle it out on the water in a friendly race and then head back to the Rooftop by the Lucky Shag for some networking.
On the final day of the City of Perth Festival of Sail, the morning will see an on-water display of kite foilers and other exciting small vessels in Perth Waters. A welcome addition to the Festival of Sail last year, Perth Kite Racing will be back to off their skills!
Before the Presentation Ceremony in Elizabeth Quay, the 2018 Warren Jones Gala Luncheon will be held at Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club between 12 and 3pm. Guests will then board powerboats and head to Perth Waters to see the finals racing unfold.
WARREN JONES INTERNATIONAL YOUTH REGATTA
Warren Jones of “Australia II” fame died suddenly on 17th May, 2002. His sudden and untimely death was a bitter blow to his many friends throughout Australia and around the World.
Warren made a fabulous contribution to local and international yachting with perhaps his greatest achievement occurring in September 1983, when as Alan Bond’s lieutenant, he led a group of Australian yachtsmen to victory to win the 1983 Americas Cup from the New York Yacht Club for the first time in 132 years of competition.
The aim of this yachting regatta, named in Warren Jones memory and started by his many friends and associates, is to give a new generation of yachtsmen and women the chance to live their dreams, just as Warren did his.
The Warren Jones International Youth Regatta has been a youth pathway for aspiring under twenty-five-year-old sailors for the past sixteen years, and, this year, boasts a range of local and international talent from Western Australia, New South Wales, New Zealand and the Netherlands.
The Regatta will be sailed between Monday, 29th January and Friday, 2nd February 2018 in Perth Waters, just outside Elizabeth Quay.
The optimal spectating area is on the foreshore of Perth Waters, by the Sun Dial and Australian Flag, and we encourage all spectators to head down their to see the action!
